Pick your region by positioning
- Hasami (Nagasaki) — casual, modern everyday porcelain; the region behind several design-forward brands popular internationally. The whole town operates as a distributed factory, coordinated by local trading houses that route your project to the right workshops
- Mino (Gifu) — Japan's largest tableware region (about half of domestic production). Best price-performance and the widest item range: mugs, plates, donabe pots. Strong for high-mix, low-volume
- Arita (Saga) — the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. Thin, refined, gift-grade. Artisan processes make small lots viable — semi-orders from 30 pieces at some makers
The cost concept that matters: molds
Ceramics pricing revolves around the mold:
- Existing shape + your design/logo (pad printing or transfer) = no mold cost, small lots possible — this is how every first collection should start
- Original shape = mold fees (tens of thousands of yen up) and larger minimums — invest here only after sales prove demand
Realistic numbers
- Semi-order: from ~30 pieces (existing shape + custom graphics)
- Via regional trading house: from ~200 pieces per design
- Timeline: ~3 months for semi-orders, ~6 for full custom
- Color caution: glaze colors shift in firing — always approve a physical sample, never a screen mockup
For cafes & restaurants
Original tableware is a signature investment: plan 6 months before opening. Confirm dishwasher and microwave compatibility — some overglaze decoration techniques aren't dishwasher-safe.
